Here are a few tips I seriously wish I knew when I first went travelling. My hair could be described as a little unruly! Its big and curly at the best of times let alone in a tropical countries humidity with salt and chlorine and sand mixed in as well! My first trip was hell with my hair! Every time I washed it it seemed to get bigger and the heat made it look like a full blown frizzy blonde afro! I was very conscious of the dreadlocks forming and I even went to get a cute colorful fabric braid one day and the poor guy on the stall had to drag a comb through my mane just to plait it! So here are a few tips to save your hair!
1. Condition!
Depending where you're going conditioner can be easy or hard to get! If you cant get conditioner you can definitely get coconut oil which is better for your hair! I tend not to bring it with me as it takes up too much room in my bag and I don't want it too leak. So usually once i arrive in the country ill get some and then that will stay with my as i travel around the country until i go to the next. If your going in the sea, pool, or even if its a really hot sticky day cover your ends in it this will make it super easy to brush it and stop any frizz! Its also quite good for smoothing back any little baby hairs. When you wash your hair that evening you'll feel slightly more human with less knotty hair!
i literally did this every day while I was in Goa and the condition of my hair was fantastic!
2. Consider Chemical Straightening
For me this was a definite after my 1st trip. My hair is very curly and i'd been researching it for months. Consider it carefully as once its done its done! My hair is bleached blonde so its not in a great condition however i'm transitioning between my natural brown and the blonde so felt it was safe. Obviously my hair isn't now pin straight and I just used a home kit from wilko which was about £6 but its so so much easier to tackle when it comes to humidity! I still condition it loads while travelling but that's more to keep it in good condition after the chemicals on it, its just so much easier than having a constant afro while on holiday!
3. Cut it all off!
Drastic? yes. I am very impatient when it comes to hair, admittedly I don't brush it every day (once a week if i'm lucky? sorry hairdressers!) So cutting it into a bob or at least shoulder length would make a lot of sense. Especially while travelling its hot and sticky so majority of the time my hairs up anyway. Cant say I've done the chop yet! I'm holding on till before my next adventure so its all fresh and I can get rid of my blonde ends! However on my last trip I met a group of people that had all shaved their heads completely! Men and Women were sick of washing their hair in cold water from the last place they stayed (I must admit some hostels water can be a bit brisk!) so shaved it all off and not one person regretted it! So its one to consider?
4. Plaits and Buffs
If you have long hair and cant plait..learn! You'll need it trust me! Almost every photo I look about 10 years old because of my hair in two little french plaits! but its protective and it works so i'll risk looking like a child for my hair!
Buffs are fabulous for covering roots, pushing hair back off your sweaty face and hiding dirty unwashed hair. It honestly solves everything! Even if you forget one they're so easy to buy out there but honestly just pack one believe me!
