I am a huge art journal lover, whether I'm at home or away its a must for me. Some people ask me if its worth bringing in their small backpack, the answer from me will always be 1000% yes! It doesn't have to be beautiful and neat and contain expensive Polaroid images (they do look cute tho!) you just need something to document your feelings, the sites, the smells, the positives and the negatives of your days. It doesn't even need to be written in every day just every so often to remind yourself of each day.
I still looks back at my Thailand travel journal that I wrote 3+ years ago, which admitted half was written out there and half when I got back and had to remember it all. It really shows too. Since then I have always taken and written in my journal while away as to keep it real and document everything! I want to re-read about the disasters and about my moody days with my boyfriend as that's what happened! Everyone has good and bad days home or away and writing/drawing helps this! You don't need to be an incredible author, likewise don't need to be an artist. Just write about the colours you saw that day, the animals and the food. Include receipts, maps, illustrations, buisness cards anything that reminds you of the day you've had! If you're worried about time you'll get to do it don't worry! Plane, train, bus it's all perfect oppotunity. Even spending 20 minutes in a cafe or in your room will do it justice.
I pack one small journal (A5/A4) journal, and a small pencil case of colourful Pens and pencils. Anything else I simply acquire along the way!
Ive included some beautiful art journals I've found online too as admittedly the Polaroids aren't mine (nor is the beautiful illustrations.. Bit jealous!) so please do try it, otherwise you'll regret it once you're home!
